Thai landrace genetics: what we lost, what we kept, what we're rebuilding

Before there was Haze, there were the Thai sativas of the 60s and 70s. Their fingerprints are everywhere โ€” and we're working to make them visible again.

Almost every modern sativa has a drop of Thai blood in it. Original Haze was Colombian ร— Mexican ร— South Indian ร— Thai. Every Haze descendant โ€” Amnesia, Super Silver, Neville's, Lemon โ€” owes the soaring head-trip part of its high to that Thai input.

But Thai landrace genetics are mostly gone in their pure form. Decades of prohibition, smuggling routes that prized weight over quality, and the simple fact that hybrid plants outyielded landraces in commercial production โ€” all of it added up to a slow extinction in the wild.

What we've done at Trichrome is partner with growers in northern Thailand who maintained small heirloom populations through all of it. That's where our six Heritage strains start: real Thai genetics crossed with modern stabilized lines. Mekong Mist, Chao Phraya Gold, Doi Pui Royal โ€” every one has a Thai parent we can name.

We're not the only ones doing this work. ACE Seeds, Real Seed Company, Bodhi โ€” they've been champions of landrace preservation for years. We owe them. What we're adding is the Thailand-based supply chain: we can grow these out here at scale, in the climate the genetics evolved for, with humidity and light cycles their ancestors knew.

This is patient work. A new Heritage strain takes us 3-4 years from F1 cross to release. We do not skip steps.
